  • US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification (August 2013)
  • Spent a decade on powerboats (19', 34', and 54') on Biscayne Bay and in the Florida Keys throwing lines, drinking rum runners, and second-guessing depth-sounders (and assisted with tropical storm/hurricane preparation as needed) 
  • Worked as mate on 37' sportfishing charter boat, handling lines, scrubbing decks, setting up and breaking down trolling equipment (planer boards and rods), cleaning lures, baiting hooks, landing and fileting fish, providing information on local sights around the Bay, and keeping charter customers entertained while waiting for the fish to bite
  • Rail meat for frostbite races twice; at mast once and jib trimmer once for Thursday night races
  • Member Coral Reef Yacht Club (Miami), 2005-2009
  • Mental and physical endurance from long-distance running (marathons & 50K trail ultramarathons)
  • An excellent cook and baker of sweets; skilled at menu planning and accommodating special diets and allergies
  • Completed university courses in oceanography and marine biology
  • Rode out three hurricanes ashore in Miami: Irene (1999), Katrina (2005), and Wilma (2005)
  • Speak enough Spanish to order in a restaurant, go shopping, and travel around; had sufficient Portuguese to travel alone by bus in Brazil without problems, though currently rusty; studied German for many years, but needs much refreshing
  • Foreign travel (non-cruising): Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Cook Islands, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand, UK, USVI
